Personal Development

At St Joseph's, we are proud to support all children to develop social awareness; strength of character; acceptance of others; and academic confidence. Personal Development is not an added extra - it is woven through all we do. Through every interaction; every lesson; every event; every assembly. Our primary aim is to prepare children for the wider world so that they can have a strong sense of purpose and belonging, and so that they have the confidence to make their voices heard.

PD Opportunities & Experiences at St Joseph's

Artsmark Silver Award

We scooped the Artsmark Silver Award for continuously inspiring and developing creativity amongst the children.

Awarded by Arts Council England, it’s the only creative quality standard for schools, and requires a rigorous assessment process.

St Joseph’s was particularly praised for its progress and resilience through the Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns. “We know how much of an impact they had on learners’ confidence and sense of wellbeing, so it is great to see how your setting has shown resilience and stuck with your plans,” said a statement from Arts Council England, giving feedback to St Joseph’s. “Pupils find learning fun, engaging and energising.”

Rachel Perry, Music, Art and DT subject leader at St Joseph’s, said: “We are extremely proud to have achieved this prestigious award, which demonstrates our ongoing commitment to providing a creative, varied and engaging range of learning opportunities within the arts for all the pupils in our school community.

“We are thrilled to share this achievement and would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone in the St Joseph‘s family for all the hard work and effort that has gone into us achieving this award.”

This year we will be working towards achieving Artsmark Gold Award!

Calderdale Active School

We are an Active School! We are part of the Calderdale Active Schools programme. This means that we aim to be as active as possible across the curriculum, not just in PE lessons.

At St Joseph's we provide high quality sporting opportunities for our children- throughout the academic year children take part in competitions, build teamwork skills and have the chance to experience a range of different sports. We are extremely proud of our sporting achievements at St Joseph's!

After School Clubs

'After school club opportunities – where talents and interests are fostered'

We provide a range of opportunities to nurture, develop and stretch pupils’ talents and interests. This years after school clubs have began with Miss Stubbs leading an invigorating netball club- we look forward to seeing our netball stars shine this term! Lucy, from Pennine Sports, is leading an after school dance club, which has been hugely popular. Abbie from LOVE SCIENCE has returned to deliver her spectacular after school science workshops.

We have an abundance of other fantastic opportunities planned for our children this year- stay tuned for more information!

Mental Health & Well-being

At St Joseph's, we acknowledge the high importance of our pupils and staff developing and maintaining good mental health and wellbeing, as well as physical health. We are committed to supporting the emotional health and wellbeing of our pupils and staff. it is our vision that all children are entitled to develop to their fullest potential academically, socially, emotionally and into healthy well beings, enabling each child to grow in confidence and be able to fully participate in everything that goes on in the wider community with confidence. It is widely recognised that a child’s emotional health and wellbeing influences their cognitive development and learning, as well as their physical and social health and their mental wellbeing in adulthood. At our school we know that everyone experiences life challenges that can make us vulnerable and at times, anyone may need additional emotional support.

At our school we:

  • help children to understand their emotions and feelings better
  • help children feel comfortable sharing any concerns or worries
  • help children socially to form and maintain relationships
  • promote self-esteem and ensure children know that they count
  • encourage children to be confident and ‘dare to be different’
  • help children to develop emotional resilience and to manage setbacks

We promote a mentally healthy environment through:

  • Promoting our virtues and encouraging a sense of belonging
  • Promoting pupil voice and opportunities to participate in decision-making
  • Celebrating academic and non-academic achievements
  • Providing opportunities to develop a sense of worth through taking responsibility for themselves and others
  • Providing opportunities to reflect.
  • Access to appropriate support that meets their needs
