Curriculum
At St. Joseph’s, we offer a rich, ambitious and inclusive curriculum that supports every child to achieve academically while growing in confidence, character and wellbeing.
Our curriculum builds knowledge over time, while nurturing creativity, curiosity and a strong sense of belonging.
We believe children learn best when they feel safe, valued and inspired. Alongside high academic expectations, we place great importance on personal development, emotional wellbeing and preparing pupils for life beyond the classroom.
A broad and balanced education
Our curriculum is based on the National Curriculum and Early Years Foundation Stage, enriched through high-quality programmes and carefully sequenced learning across all subjects. From English, mathematics and science to the arts, humanities, computing, design and physical education, pupils experience a wide range of opportunities that encourage exploration, creativity and independent thinking. Learning is progressive, with knowledge and skills revisited and deepened as children move through the school. Families can explore each subject in more detail on our individual curriculum pages.
Creativity, culture and enrichment
Creativity is a vital part of life at St. Joseph’s. We are proud holders of the Artsmark Silver Award, recognising our strong commitment to arts and cultural education. Pupils develop confidence and expression through art, design, music and performance, with opportunities to showcase their work within school and the wider community. Music is a particular strength, supported by our partnership with Calderdale Music, giving pupils access to instrumental learning, performances and individual tuition.
Active, healthy learners
As part of the Calderdale Active Schools programme, we promote physical activity across the curriculum, not just in PE lessons. Through sport, competitions and clubs, pupils develop teamwork, resilience and confidence while enjoying an active lifestyle.
Personal development and wellbeing
Personal development is woven through everyday school life. Through PSHE, Relationships and Health Education, Religious Education and wellbeing programmes such as myHappyminds, children build emotional understanding, resilience and positive relationships. We aim to develop confident, caring young people who feel safe, supported and ready to learn.

Through high-quality teaching, targeted support and a culture of aspiration, pupils are encouraged to believe in themselves and their potential.
Preparing children for life
Our curriculum goes beyond academic outcomes. By combining strong teaching with creativity, wellbeing, physical activity and personal development, we help children grow into confident, capable and compassionate young people, ready for the challenges and opportunities ahead.
Strong outcomes for every child
Our curriculum is carefully designed to give every child the best possible chance to succeed. This approach leads to consistently strong outcomes across the school. From Early Years through to the end of Key Stage 2, pupils make excellent progress while also developing wellbeing, confidence and personal growth.
